Does Home Insurance Cover a Flooded Basement?

Most homeowners assume water in the basement is covered. Sometimes it is — and sometimes it is not.

In this video, we explain the difference between flood coverage, ground seepage, and water backup coverage in a standard Michigan homeowners policy. We also cover why sump pump failures and sewer backups can create major out-of-pocket costs if the right endorsement is missing.

Real example:A finished basement took on four inches of water after heavy rain and a sump pump failure. Cleanup and repairs totaled $8,400. One homeowner had a water backup endorsement and was covered after deductible. The neighbor next door had no endorsement and paid the full cost themselves.

Check your declarations page for:

• Water Backup Coverage

• Coverage limit ($5k, $10k, $25k+)

• Your deductible amount

If you are unsure whether your policy includes water backup coverage, now is a good time to verify it before storm season.
