The Claims Conversation: Timelines, ACV vs. RCV, and Auto Supplements

If you’ve ever felt frustrated by the insurance claim process, you’re in good company. The most common pain points we hear about—waiting for an estimate, getting a first check that seems too small, and learning the shop found more damage—are all normal parts of how claims work. Understanding them won’t make damage disappear, but it can reduce stress and help you make better decisions.

Why timelines stretch after inspections After a property inspection, the adjuster still has to prepare the estimate, evaluate coverage, and often send it through an internal review. Following Michigan and Ohio storm events, backlogs can add days. We’re currently seeing some estimates land around ten business days after the inspection. It feels long when you’re living with damage, but a delay doesn’t automatically mean your claim is stalled—asking precise questions can reveal the true status.

ACV vs. replacement cost (RCV): Why first checks look light Most people expect a single check for the total replacement cost. Many policies instead pay ACV first—replacement cost minus depreciation—so you have money to start. If your policy includes replacement cost, the insurer may pay the withheld depreciation after you complete covered repairs or replacements and submit documentation. Your deductible is subtracted from the claim and isn’t paid back later.

Auto claim supplements: Hidden damage is common Initial auto estimates cover visible damage. Once the shop removes bumper covers or panels, they may find additional damage. The shop submits a supplement (an additional estimate) and the insurer reviews which added repairs are covered. “Waiting on approval” is usually review, not denial.

Questions that get better answers

  • Has the estimate (or supplement) been submitted? When?

  • Is it in review? Has the adjuster acknowledged it?

  • What documents or photos are still needed?

  • What’s the next step and who owns it—me, the contractor/shop, or the adjuster?

What you can expect from our agency We can’t make coverage decisions or promise when a check will arrive. We can help you understand the stage your claim is in, explain what the insurer is asking for, and follow up when promised updates don’t arrive. In short: we guide, clarify, and advocate for progress when communication breaks down.

Practical next steps

  • Protect the property or vehicle from further damage and keep receipts for potential reimbursement under the policy.

  • Keep repair documents organized—photos, invoices, and serial numbers if applicable.

  • Note any time limits for repairs or documentation in your claim paperwork.

Bottom line

A little clarity goes a long way. With the right questions and an advocate in your corner, you’ll feel more confident navigating timelines, payments, and supplements. If you’re unsure what’s happening with your claim, call us. We’ll help you understand what comes next.
