5 Questions to Ask During Your Insurance Checkup

Most people ask their insurance agent, “Am I covered?” and receive a polite “Yes.” But that question does not always reveal the coverage gaps that could matter most during a claim. A better insurance review starts with better questions.

An insurance checkup is one of the simplest ways to make sure your coverage still fits your life. Homes change, families change, vehicles change, and risks change. If your policies have not been reviewed recently, there may be gaps you do not know about.

One real example involved a Southgate client who asked how their policy handled water in the basement. During the review, we found they only had $5,000 in water backup coverage. They increased that limit to $25,000 for about $8 per month. Two months later, heavy rain caused an $18,700 loss. That small coverage change made a major difference.

During your next insurance review, ask your agent these five questions:

  1. Is my home’s rebuild estimate current, including any updates I have made?

  2. How much water backup coverage do I have?

  3. Do I have service line and equipment breakdown coverage?

  4. Are my auto liability and uninsured/underinsured motorist limits high enough?

  5. Would an umbrella policy make sense for me?

You should also ask whether you have any gaps related to Airbnb, a side business, or teen drivers in the household. The goal of an insurance checkup is not just to confirm that you have policies. It is to understand how those policies would actually respond when something happens.
