IN-THE-KNOW

Before You Put the Camper Away for Winter

Camper being opened after winter storage in early spring.

The first warm weekend in spring is a terrible time to discover that something happened to the camper months ago.

Before you put it away, start with the place it will actually spend the winter. Is it secure? Is it protected from weather? What are you leaving inside? Have you winterized it properly?

Then look at the insurance. Don't assume every kind of damage that can happen in storage is covered. Rodent damage is a good example: some policies offer coverage for it, but many carriers do not. If that's a concern, ask what your own policy says.

Take food and valuables out. Take pictures of the camper and anything you're leaving inside. Lock it up and keep the pictures somewhere you'll be able to find them.

If you're considering changing coverage while the camper is stored, talk with us first. The right answer depends on the camper, the policy and your situation.

A little work before you close the door can make the first trip of spring a lot more enjoyable.
