IN-THE-KNOW

Why Your Auto Insurance Asks for Your Kids’ Information (Even If They Don’t Drive Yet)

By: Chris Widenhofer

If you’re a parent in Michigan, this question comes up all the time:

“Why does my auto insurance agent need my kids’ information if they’re not even driving yet?”

It feels unnecessary. Sometimes it even feels intrusive.

But in Michigan, there’s a very specific — and very important — reason this question gets asked, and it has nothing to do with rating your child as a driver.

Let’s break it down honestly.

The Michigan Rule Most People Don’t Realize Exists

Michigan is unique when it comes to auto insurance because of Personal Injury Protection (PIP).

PIP coverage is what pays for medical expenses if someone is injured in an auto accident — regardless of who caused the crash.

Here’s the key part most people don’t know:

Auto insurance in Michigan applies to every resident relative living in the home, regardless of age or driving status.

That means:

  • Toddlers

  • Elementary-age kids

  • Teenagers without licenses

They all matter when it comes to coverage.

Why Insurance Needs All Household Members Listed

Let’s say:

  • You have three kids

  • All five of you are in the vehicle

  • An accident happens

  • Multiple people are injured

Your auto insurance policy is what determines whether everyone’s medical bills are covered properly.

If someone living in the household isn’t listed, it can create:

  • Coverage delays

  • Claim disputes

  • In worst cases, denied benefits

And that’s the situation no parent wants to discover after an accident.

This Isn’t About Charging You More

This is important to say plainly:

👉 Listing your kids is not the same as rating them as drivers.

Non-driving children are not being charged as operators. They are listed so the insurance company:

  • Knows who is covered

  • Can correctly apply PIP benefits

  • Can’t later claim “missing information” during a claim review

This is a protection step, not a pricing trick.

Where People Get Into Trouble (Without Meaning To)

There have been real cases — including situations involving companies like GEICO — where policies ran into issues because:

  • Household members weren’t listed

  • The insured didn’t understand why the information mattered

  • There was no intent to mislead, just a lack of explanation

Unfortunately, insurance companies don’t judge intent — they judge what’s on the policy.

That’s why being upfront from the beginning matters so much.

Our Philosophy at the Champagne Agency

One thing we’re very intentional about is education.

We make it a point to tell clients why we ask for this information — not just that we need it.

Our standard rule:

Everyone living in the household gets listed, regardless of age or driving status.

That way:

  • There are no surprises

  • No awkward claim conversations

  • No “I wish I had known this sooner” moments
